[OP-ED] SE7EN and Sangchu's Scandal

The Korean entertainment industry was shocked with news of a few celebrity soldiers went to visit a massage parlour. Joongang Ilbo then revealed two of them are SE7EN and Sangchu. After the news went viral, SE7EN's fancafe is full of rage and frustration posts by his fans. Most of them are unhappy with it since everyone knew he is openly dating Park Han Byul. With Sangchu saying "I went there to have knee treatment," is simply unacceptable since massage parlours in Korea (or maybe other countries too) are famous for adult services. Also, the latest statement from the massage parlour rep does not do any good to the suspected celebrity soldiers as it came out suspicious to netizens.

"They came in wearing hats so we didn't know they were celebrities. There weren't any private rooms so they couldn't get a massage and left. They did not take part in adult entertainment." - rep

Comments like "You've been paid to shut up", "Stop lying and tell the truth", and etc are dominating the posts of the massage parlour's rep statement. Up until now, it has always been Sangchu that do the talk and YG Entertainment, popular with its "let's keep quiet about this, hoping that people will forget about it afterwards" style, has never release any statements for SE7EN. Sangchu, as a senior, tried his best to defend SE7EN but his effort was highly criticized by netizens, saying that SE7EN is at fault and both of them deserves to be punished.

After Rain's incident, it seems that celebrity soldiers are gaining lots of hate from day to day. This incident somehow ignites more anger from netizens who opposed the idea of having celebrity soldiers as celebrity is just another career out of thousands of careers available in this world. "What did they do that they deserved to get first class treatment?"

This is a really big issue going on in Korea right now, and since practically South Korea is still at war with North Korea, being served in army is one of the most crucial point for Korean men. To see news of celebrity soldiers going on vacation and having fun instead of practising on defending their country ignites the flame of anger in most netizens. I acknowledge that the celebrities somehow helped in bringing in foreigners to visit South Korea and making South Korea to be well-known but they are just normal human beings with somewhat cool career that made them popular.

I dislike the fact that SE7EN's agency, YG Entertainment, decided to remain in silence and let Sangchu and his agency to do the talk. This somehow resembles Jang Woo - Oh Yeon Seo's case, where only 1 side giving out statement and the other one do nothing and expects everything will be settled by itself. The only difference is, both Sangchu and SE7EN are hated equally.

I could not say much about this scandal, as I am not one of the witnesses and Sangchu might be right - maybe he went there just for a knee massage(?) and SE7EN went along as his company. Who knows? Okay so I tried to be (and force you guys) an optimist and as neutral as I can for this case. Money holds the most power for any cases, and there is a possibility that this company paid that company to cover their artiste's mistake. It's a mystery that we could never know unless we are working in any of those companies involved.

What do you think about celebrity soldiers? Do they deserve the long vacations and minimal physical training compared to other ranks? What do you think about netizens harsh comments on this scandal? As for me, celebrity soldiers is okay, but to be fair and square, they need to at least do the same thing like any other ranks do and the only thing that differs them from other ranks is that they can perform for army ceremonies or whatnot.
