Superhero Idol, AlphaBAT Showcase in Malaysia

                On the 27th of April 2014, K-Pop group AlphaBAT had their second showcase in Malaysia at Summit USJ. The first showcase was held at Danga City Mall, Johor Bahru. AlphaBAT is a group produced by Simtong Entertainment. The group consists of 9 members, B:eta(Ji Ha Yong), C:ode (Kim Sang Hun), D:elta (Choi Yeon Soo), E:psilon (Yoo Young Jin), F:ie (Lee San Ha), G:amma (Kim Jun Su), H:eta (Seol Jun), I:ota (Shin Se Rin) and J:eta (Kim Su Yeob) who came to Malaysia to have their 1st showcase and also to have an audition for the 10th member. AlphaBAT had their debut showcase in Korea on the 10th of November 2013 with the single ‘AB City’. The group then released their first mini album on the 25th of February 2014 with ‘Ttanttara’ as the main title. In the mini album, they also have a song, ‘Always’ which was composed by the members themselves as a gift for their fans, Alpha.


                The showcase opened with a stage by Bubble Candy, a group of young girls performing a dance cover of Gi-Yeuk’, an original song from Global Icon who came from the same label company with AlphaBAT, SIMTONG Entertainment. The audition for the 10th member of AlphaBAT starts right away after the opening stage. The short-listed contestants were required to perform in front of the crowd and was judged by the representatives from AlphaBAT's management company, SIMTONG Entertainment.


                The ten  short-listed contestants were Jun who free-style rapped his performance for his stage. Jason Chia who sang a sweet ballad, Jam sang Infinite’s ‘Nothing’s Over’ while playing percussion. Alex sang beautifully and mesmerized the judges with Kim Bum Soo’s ‘I Miss You’. The next contestant, Faiz sang Super Junior Yesung’s ‘Gray Paper’, Isaac from Kota Kinabalu sang and rap a medley that includes EXO’s ‘Overdose’. Alex danced to Chinese traditional and hiphop fusion genre. Arif, from Sabah sang a ballad song. Kwan Yung danced sexily and elegantly. The last contestant, Shawn sang the famous ‘Let it Go’ originally by Idina Menzel in 3 languages.

                The fans were screaming passionately as the 9 members of AlphaBAT, appeared on the stage singing a cover of DBSK’s ‘Love in the Ice’. The fans shouting grew louder as the rapper I:ota and J:eta started rapping to the group self-written rap for the cover. After finish singing the first song, the leader, B:eta took the stage and introduce themselves, “Attention! Who’s the best? Who? AlphaBAT!” with the enthusiastic fans following their introduction. One by one, the members started introducing themselves and even put in some malay words into their introduction.

                Before proceeding with their second stage, the MC of the event interviewed the member and ask them about their opinion about the fans in Malaysia. B:eta answered the MC by telling him that, “We didn’t know that we would be this famous in Malaysia. We’re so surprised to see how this! We’re so thankful for everyone here for liking us.” The MC then proceed on asking them about their thoughts on Malaysia and I:ota simply said “amazing” and B:eta continue by saying that, “Firstly, I think Malaysia is a very beautiful country,” and he praises the female fans in Malaysia. Malaysian Alpha are lucky enough to witness AlphaBAT’s live performances since this trip is also their first overseas schedule since debut.

                AlphaBAT second performance is the song ‘Always’ which was composed by AlphaBAT and RealMan while the lyrics was personally written by the members themselves. The song was released on the 19th of February 2014, earlier than the mini album as a gift from AlphaBAT to their fans. The music video for ‘Always’ also showed all the show they had before they debuted from 2011 until their debut showcase. After finish performing the song, B:eta also said that the song carry the meaning of “being together with Alpha forever”.

                After finish performing, they invited 9 lucky fans onto the stage to play game with AlphaBAT. All of the fans received the hand-made soap by AlphaBAT as a gift for participating in the game. At the end of the game, B:eta also commented that he’s happy that he’s able to spend the time and play around with Alpha like that. The MC also asked, “Where did the idea of making the soap comes from?” and D:elta answered, “It was for white day and we decided that instead of giving sweets, we decided on giving our hand-made soap instead,” and I:ota added “to keep the fans clean,” as a joke.


                The group proceed on performing their next song, which are also covers of song by Infinite, ‘Nothing’s Over’ and Beast’s  ‘Fiction’. After performing Fiction, the opening act, Bubble Candy came on stage and present their ‘Ttanttara’ dance cover to AlphaBAT and B:eta asked for them to perform the chorus together. After taking a commemorative photo together with Bubble Candy, AlphaBAT went on performing their debut single, ‘AB City’ and their second single ‘Ttanttara’.  After finish performing ‘Ttanttara’, the group went backstage for a quick breath and went they got on stage again, the fanclub in Malaysia, AlphabatMY prepared a small birthday celebration for members, B:eta, D:elta and H:eta.


                The showcase then went on with photography session with a few lucky fans that managed to win the contest held by the organizers. After the photography session, the group had the fan signing events. The fans have also expressed that they are very satisfied with the fan signing event, “an event that we usually can only see happening through fancam is happening to ourselves,” said by one of the lucky Alpha.

                At the end of the event, AlphaBAT expressed their gratitude to being able to come to Malaysia and meet up with all the Malaysian Alpha. They also expressed their gratitude for the warm welcome from everyone. The group ended the showcase at The Summit USJ. AlphaBAT also have schedules planned on the next day in Station One Signature, Taman Mutiara Cheras and an event on the Northern part of Peninsular Malaysia at the Lost World of Tambun in Ipoh.
