[OP-ED] Idols dating

These days, the hot topic among fans are about the selca scandal that involves IU and Eun Hyuk. I won’t touch on it because I’m sure the netizens, be it Korean netizens or the international ones have been digging through a lot of things to find evidences about whether the two of them are dating or not.

Here I am, writing this to touch on the bigger things. The first generation idol in Korea Entertainment Industry was the days when H.O.T, S.E.S, SHINHWA, g.o.d, Fin.K.L and Baby V.O.X were promoting. Bringing it to 10 or more years later, here we have all the idols we see performing on the television right now. Then and now, ‘dating’ is like a taboo word or thing to do among idols. Why?

From what I read through the little circle of friends around me and also by readings through all the postings on the new media, I can safely say that the main reason for fans rejecting the whole concept of their favorite idols dating is because they feel some kind of betrayal when the idol date someone. And now I’ll ask more questions, ‘why do you feel betrayed? Is it because they’re dating someone? Or is it because they’re keeping it a secret?’ What goes through our little minds when we cry our hearts out on the news about our favorite idol dating? What goes through our mind when we slam the keyboard of our computer raging on the idols dating? Or what goes through our mind when we smile at the news of our idols dating?

If it’s a sense of betrayal you felt that cause you to be mad at the news of your idols dating, there’s only two reason that I can come out with. 1st is because you feel betrayed that your idols kept the relationship a secret while the 2nd one is because you’re jealous by the fact that that person your idol is dating is not you. For the first one, I can say that some fans feel betrayed because they believed that the relationship between an idol and a fan is not only about buying their albums to give them food on their table but being a fan is like being a friend, to support them through thick and thin and to have them hiding their relationship is as if they doesn’t trust their fans enough to be honest about it. True, the fans might still be hurt by it, but surely they will support their idols either way. If it’s because of the second reason, I don’t know what to say about it. Sure, there are artists who have dated their fans and there are idols who says they believe they’ll marry their fans, but the probability of you to be chosen as their partner is, honestly close to none at all.

There's one more thing that makes fans rage on rumors on idols dating. It's because their partners is not a match for the idols. When fans read about it and rage about how their idol deserve someone better, maybe you can try and ask yourself, what if one day, the person they're dating is a prince or princess from some country, will you still allow the two to date? Is it really because their partner doesn't match the standards your idol have? Take a minute of your time raging about how their partner doesn't deserve someone as cool or charming as your favorite idol is and think that the person who really knows who they are right now is their family, friends and might be their partner as well. We won't know if what we see on the media is their true self or not. They can say 'real' for all they want but most people change in front of the camera. Maybe in real life, their partner is a better person than our favorite idol is? Who knows?

Sometimes, we should take some time and push the ‘off’ button to the admirations we have on our favorite idols and see that behind the mask they put on for them to be on stage or on the television, there’s a person who looks and acts just like us, because they’re humans. Just like you and me, they have the need to love and to be loved by someone and to be understand by someone. Despite fans’ promise to always be there for them, they would want someone who they can talk to and someone who can share their happiness and sadness with them.

How do you think Fan god (g.o.d’s fans) feel when suddenly the magnae of the group, Kim Tae Woo announced his marriage before his older brothers get married? How do you feel Friend (S.E.S fans) feels when Shoo and Eugene announces their marriage? And what do you think Shinhwa Changjo (Shinhwa fans) feels when Shinhwa members announce to the media about their relationship? There will comes a time when you as a fan will start to accept the fact that your idols will date and marry someone, it may not be soon but you will eventually do. Just like how the first generation idols’ fan start to accept the fact that their ‘oppa’ and ‘noona’ will date someone.

The easiest way for my friend and I to accept it when we read about our favorite idols are dating is by reminding ourselves, “They’re humans too, just like you and me”, and who knows that’s an easy way for you to accept your idols dating?
